Hello
I was supposed to start my personal statement two days ago, but it has been harder than what I thought. I wrote two paragraphs, but they did not make sense to me. So, I erased them I have been doing the same thing over and over. Well, I will stop thinking about it for today. I finally started the meetings for the club called P.O.D.E.R (emPoweringOurselves to Demand Educational Rights), I was really nervous and sad because only six people attended to the first meeting not even the advisor was there. But, the meeting wentbetter that what I thought, the people who assisted are very nice and they also want to create awareness amongst AB-540 students. I think we will be a great team. I have to say that I feel more confident after the boot camp, it really help me a lot. THANK YOU Kathy and advisors.

From my experience, having six people in a room is GREAT! It is not about getting tens, or hundreds of people together. It is just about creating power and awareness among that group. And, really, all groups began small. If you need more connections across the state, you should join the CA DREAM network, which is a coalition of over 30 AB 540 groups across the state. Yoshi – don’t lose hope. 6 people is a lot for a first meeting.
I can give some tips and tricks for recruiting more people. One of the things we used to do was flyer the campus with ‘free pizza.’ Okay, maybe that’s not what you need. Also, talk to other student clubs and see if they know students who would be interested.
Congrats for submitting your first post, Yoshi! As I said at the Boot Camp, we can’t be perfectionists — we’ve got to stop erasing and just hit send! Great that SIX people attended your first meeting, and that the meeting went well. Yes, you’ve got yourself a team now! Let us know what we can do to help. You can definitely post an announcement about your next meeting on the E4FC Facebook page (www.facebook.com/e4fcfans). We’ve almost got 100 fans there!
Yoshi! Six is the perfect number to start the ab 540 group he-he
. As Beleza said, you can always reach out to the CA Dream Network for help – they’re wonderful people. Also, feel free to contact me and I can put you in touch with other folks from the network as well.
Don’t be discouraged. When RISE at UC Berkeley started we had no adviser, no money and nowhere to meet and we were barely six in all. You are already a leader for taking initiative.
